What happens when a sensor trips
In a plain alarm installation, a sensor reports movement or an opening, the panel triggers a siren or sends a call, and no one knows in advance whether the cause is an intruder, a cat, a curtain in a draft, or a branch that tripped an outdoor sensor. The siren reacts to the trigger, not to the actual event.
Verification: the operator looks at the picture before calling
In a verified alarm, the sensor's report reaches the monitoring centre together with a feed from the camera covering that same zone. The operator sees the cause before calling anyone — a cat, a curtain or a branch gets recognised and the event closes without waking the owner; a genuine break-in gets recognised just as fast, and only then does a call go out along the agreed protocol.
What false alarms cost
The cost of a false alarm isn't just a broken night's sleep. Every false call spends trust — the owner's trust in the system, neighbours' patience with a siren going off, the responsiveness of anyone called to that address. A system that trips without reason often enough starts getting ignored in practice — which is exactly the state in which an alarm is least useful.
The tradeoff: verification needs a camera on every zone
A plain alarm is cheaper and quicker to install: sensors and a panel, with no requirement that every zone also have a camera covering it. A verified alarm needs that camera, plus a monitoring contract — more equipment and a monthly commitment, but in exchange, only what the operator confirms as a genuine event ever reaches a phone call.
Recommendation
If a site sits empty at night or over the weekend and someone genuinely needs to respond to a signal, verification pays for itself through avoided unnecessary calls and through the system staying taken seriously after months in service.
